Hospice Foundation’s 2023 Annual Appeal – “Care Throughout the Circle of Life” will make sure that anybody eligible for hospice care will never be turned away, regardless of their ability to pay.

To meet the hospice and palliative care needs of our community now and in the future, we have constructed two buildings on our Mishawaka campus – a 12-bed inpatient unit on the banks of the scenic St. Joseph River, and a centralized facility for doctors, nurses and other clinical staff supporting CHC patients.

Since 1980, Center for Hospice Care has kept its promise that no one eligible for hospice care will be turned aways due to an inability to pay. Each year, CHC spends millions of dollars on charity care. To support this mission and to honor a long-serving member of our community, the Hospice Foundation has created the Sister Carmel Helping Hands Fund.

In addition to providing compassionate end-of-life care to patients, Center for Hospice Care provides programs to grieving family members – at no cost. The Hospice Foundation is proud to help raise support to ensure these programs are available in perpetuity.

• Donate to Camp Evergreen – A camp for grieving children that gives them the opportunity to share their grief with other kids, and to have fun participating in camp activities.
• Donate to After Images – A bereavement program that uses a combination of art and counseling to help participants process their grief.

Center for Hospice Care is proud to be part of the “We Honor Veterans” campaign, a collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization. Its purpose is to raise awareness among veterans of the end-of-life services and benefits available to them.

Center for Hospice Care has achieved the highest designation, Level 4, in the “We Honor Veterans” Partner program. As a Level 4 partner, we integrate veteran-specific content into our staff and volunteer orientation and education. By endowing this important program, CHC can continue to provide what may be the last opportunity for veterans to feel that their service was not in vain, and that they are appreciated.

Thanks to the Vera Z. Dwyer Charitable Trust and generous donors, CHC has been able to fund an additional seat in the IU School of Medicine’s one-year Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine program. This program is dedicated to training individuals to develop expertise in the care of patients with serious illness and to become leaders in the field of palliative medicine.

For several years, Center for Hospice Care and the Hospice Foundation have partnered with the Palliative Care Association of Uganda to help improve the availability and quality of hospice care across Uganda. Road to Hope was created to provide critical support to children who are orphaned after serving as caregivers for the terminally ill parent. The Hospice Foundation is also the new home for Global Partners in Care.

A bequest or other planned gift to the Hospice Foundation leaves a legacy of caring that extends beyond your lifetime. The opportunities available may allow you to make significant gifts with favorable tax consequences. Investing money in a way that allows you to receive benefits during your lifetime while the remaining funds go to the Hospice Foundation after your death is another possibility.
